The Art and Science of Personal Training Workshop
Description
Interested in becoming a Personal Trainer but not sure where to start? Have what it takes to be a good Trainer but lack the foundational education? Engage in The Art and Science of Personal Training course to build confidence for the CPTN Personal Trainer Certification. This Workshop is held on both weekends listed.
The following topics will be discussed:
- personal training, professionalism, exercise physiology, biomechanics & applied physiology.
- health screening, cardio-respiratory fitness, muscle conditioning, flexibility training & programming for the healthy adult.
- modifications for health conditions, persons with disabilities, weight management and musculoskeletal injuries
- communication skills, teaching techniques, safety guidelines, legal liability issues and professional responsibilities.
Recommended Supplemental Workshops:
- Resistance Training Course, or equivalent

Course Instructors

Paul Aspinall, BPE, MES, CPTN-CPT
Paul is a professor at Seneca College who teaches anatomy and physiology, as well as physical preparation courses for the Firefighters program. He is a CPTN Certified Personal Trainer, Practical Assessor, Course Conductor, and a Medical Exercise Specialist. His educational background includes a degree in Physical Education with a Major in Athletic Therapy and a Diploma in Fitness and Lifestyle Management from George Brown College. Paul also lectures to various corporations within the city on fitness and wellness inside the workplace.

Jeff Boris, BPHE, CPTN-CPT.M
Jeff is a two-time award-winning trainer recognized for his teaching, dedication and unique contributions to the fitness industry and draws from 20 years experience pioneering the concept of a Holistic Fitness Trainer. As the former Chair of Professional Development for the CPTN, Education Coordinator for the Canadian Centre for Activity and Aging, and Nutrition and Health Research Educator in the Natural Health Products Industry, Jeff’s diverse expertise is often sought after by the media for contributions to radio, TV and magazines. As an author and international presenter, Jeff delivers up to 200 presentations annually and teaches a course he created for the Health Sciences Dept. at University of Western Ontario. Graham Brown, HBPHE, NCCP
Graham is a 10-year veteran of the fitness industry and holds a degree in Kinesiology. He has worked as a personal trainer and athletic coach nationally and internationally with general populations, individual athletes, and provincial-level sports teams. He specializes in coaching, sports specific training and couples training. Graham owns and operates New Heights Fitness & Wellness Centre in Hanover, Ontario.

Colleen Holmes, CPTN-CPT, CES
Colleen has developed and trained Ontario's Elite Service Industries Professionals (Police and Pre-service fire) for Ontario's number one college for the service industry sector-Conestoga College in Kitchener Ontario. Private clients and students have been placed within various Fire departments and Police stations across Canada. She inspires passion, compassion and a drive to excel. Karsten Jensen, M.Sc., CPTN-CPT.M, C.H.E.K 2, HLC 3
Strength and Conditioning Expert Karsten Jensen has helped world class and Olympic athletes from 14 different sports since 1993. Many of his athletes have won Olympic medals, European Championships, World Championships and ATP Tournaments. He believes in the unlimited potential of the human being and shares his viewpoints as an international speaker, author of several books and educator with the Certified Professional Trainers Network. He currently works as a high performance trainer at the University of Toronto and also shares "Insider Principles of World Class Strength and Conditioning Methods" through his website www.yestostrength.com. Janice Pepe, CPTN-CPT
Janice is a CPTN Certified Personal Trainer, CPTN Practical Assessor, and Course Conductor with Pilates and Yoga certifications. Accomplished in corporate health and wellness, facility management, and fitness assessment, Janice specializes in cardiac rehabilitation, back care and training for physically demanding occupations, such as policing. A CSEP Certified Exercise Physiologist, Janice teaches Fitness and Lifestyle Management studies at Georgian College.

Jackie McLarnon, CPTN-CPT
Jackie has over 17 years of experience in the fitness industry which all started with becoming a YMCA certified group fitness instructor. She graduated from Conestoga College earning a diploma in Fitness and Health Promotion and is now a member of the Program Advisory Committee for that program. Jackie is looking forward to teaching at the College in 2011. Jackie works as the Supervisor of Fitness at the YMCA-YWCA of Guelph, is a YMCA Canada Training Educator, CPTN Certified Personal Trainer and Course Conductor. Jackie is certified in all areas of group fitness, individual conditioning and yoga. Jackie is inspired to stay fit because of her love of physical challenges such as motorcycle riding, rock climbing and zip lining.

Rick Mueller, HBPE, MES, CPTN-CPT
Rick draws upon 23 years of experience, research and education in the industry to deliver advanced sustainable lifestyle changes through effective nutrition, exercise and personal coaching with positive active and proactive support. Among his many credentials he is also certified in Post-Rehabilitation, is a Nutrition and Wellness Specialist and Fitness Planning Specialist and holds a Life coaching certificate from WHC. Rick understands that respecting and strengthening the mind/body connection to enhance vitality is key. The purpose of his training style is to enhance the body’s endocrine system to deliver optimal youth hormones for ideal health, performance and lean muscle mass.

Amy Bray, Hons. BPHE, CPTN-CPT
Amy holds an Honors Bachelor degree in Physical & Health Education from Laurentian University. She has been working in the fitness industry, as a Personal Trainer, Educator and Group Exercise Instructor for the last 13 years. Amy has worked in many spectrums of the Health & Wellness industry, from Rehab Clinics, Commercial Gyms to managing Health & Fitness Programs for large corporations. She has also successfully run her own Personal Training business for the past 8 years. As a Course Conductor of CPTN’s, The Art & Science of Personal Training, Amy believes in the value of education, practical experience and being passionate about what you do everyday!

Ian Young, BSM, CSCS, CPTN-CPT
Ian Young got his start in the fitness industry as a CPTN Personal Trainer during his undergrad in Sport and Exercise Management at Brock University. Over the following 10+ years his involvement in the industry has spanned facility management roles with Brock University and with the City of Vancouver, education roles with the CPTN as a Practical Assessor and Course Conductor along with coaching and training roles with athletes across the country. Ian now works as a Firefighter in British Columbia but he will always be involved in the fitness industry in an instructional capacity with CPTN and through his company Code 3 Fitness, specializing in tactical and athletic strength and conditioning.

Susan Yurincich, HBA, CPTN-CPT
Susan is currently the Fitness Centre Manager at Brock University. She is passionate about providing developmental opportunities to trainers and educational opportunity to members. Susan is a CPTN Certified Personal Trainer, Practical Assessor and Course Conductor. She is also a Certified YMCA Group Fitness Instructor (Muscle Resistance and Core), and a Fitness Kickboxing Canada Instructor. Susan's enthusiasm for fitness began as a young athlete, and continued on during her time as a varsity volleyball player. After completing her HBA, she pursued graduate studies in Sport Management overseas. Susan has extensive group fitness instructional experience through her time with the YMCA. She has also been trained to instruct both post-cardiac and osteoporotic clients, and currently teaches a falls prevention program for seniors.
